🔥 ES TOP TEN MUNDIAL (8) Y ENTRENÓ A POLICÍAS DE NUEVA YORK. ES DEL BARRIO PORTEÑO DE ALMAGRO, ARGENTINA, Y VA POR EL MUNDIAL DE JIU JITSU. 🔥
En su corta estancia en este país, ya está en el top ten de la categoría Feather No Gi Black Belt de la federación más importante del mundo, la International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF), ganando en este período la medalla de oro en el International Orlando Open en julio de 2021, el International Kansas City Open en octubre del mismo año y el International New Haven Open el 14 de agosto pasado, ya en 2022. También, en este corto período, hizo podio en otros torneos internacionales: Atlanta, Denver, Charleston, Phoenix, Dallas y Nashville, todos también de la IBJJF.
También durante su estadía en Estados Unidos, entrenó a agentes del Departamento de Policía de Nueva York (el renombrado New York Police Department NYPD), quienes habían pedido ayuda para tener más recursos a la hora de reducir a personas que consideran en actitud peligrosa para sí mismos o para terceros, como una alternativa al arma de fuego o a la Taser.
Antes de vivir en Estados Unidos, el deportista argentino ganó la medalla de oro con la Selección Argentina de Grappling (una disciplina similar al Jiu Jitsu), vistiendo la remera oficial albiceleste en el Torneo Panamericano de esa disciplina realizado en el Cenard en 2019. Por otra parte, ganó también dos medallas doradas en "la meca mundial del Jiu Jitsu", Brasil, 2018 en San Pablo y en 2019 en Belo Horizonte. También compitió en 2019 en Europa, más precisamente en Roma, Italia.
En cuanto a su carrera profesional, Furlong se recibió en 2012 de Diseñador de Imagen y Sonido en la Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA), en la FADU (Facultad de Arquitectura, Diseño y Urbanismo). "Después me especialicé en efectos digitales y trabajé en varias películas, series y comerciales", cuenta. Al mismo tiempo, "entrenaba dos veces por día, a las 7 de la mañana y 8 de la noche, de lunes a sábado", precisa. Hoy en Nueva York entrena tres veces por día.
En el plano internacional, trabajó en el diseño de efectos visuales en la serie Maniac de Netflix, en la que actúan Emma Stone y Jonah Hill, y en la cinemática del juego de Games of Thrones. También en las películas argentinas La odisea de los giles, Corazón de León, 30 noches con mi ex, y El espejo de los otros.
"En 2021 decidimos venir a Nueva York con mi esposa Paula (Peralta) por unos meses, la idea era venir a entrenar y competir por tres meses y preparame para un torneo importante en Europa. Llegamos acá un 29 de mayo, con todos los protocolos todavía por la pandemia, pero estando acá surgió la oportunidad de ser sponsoreado por Lotus Club New York para poder extender la estadía, el entrenamiento y la competencia, así que decidimos apostar a quedarnos por un tiempo más y por suerte todo se fue dando, y ella siempre me apoyó para que podamos seguir viviendo esta experiencia, es fotógrafa y muchas veces retrata momentos de entrenamiento o competencia, y es un gran apoyo para que yo pueda seguir compitiendo", relata, Santiago, al respecto.

THE ARGENTINE TOP TEN IN JIU JITSU WHO TRAINS COPS FROM THE NEW YORK POLICE AND GOES FOR THE WORLD MASTER GOLD MEDAL IN LAS VEGAS THIS THURSDAY, AUGUST 31ST
A high-performance Argentine athlete will compete this Thursday, September 1st in the city of Las Vegas, United States, for the Jiu Jitsu world championship, in the Black Belt Lightfeather category.
Black belt Santiago Furlong, 35 years old, from the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Almagro, Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, who has lived in the United States for little over a year and is part of the Lotus Club team in New York City, one of the most competitive schools in the world in Jiu Jitsu.
In his short stay in the US, he is already in the top ten of the No Gi Feather Black Belt category of the most important federation in the world, the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF), winning in this period the gold medal in the International Orlando Open in July 2021, the International Kansas City Open in October of the same year and the International New Haven Open on August 14, already in 2022. Also, in this short period, he finished top 3 in other international tournaments: Atlanta , Denver, Charleston, Phoenix, Dallas and Nashville, all also from the IBJJF.
Also during his stay in the United States, he trained agents of the New York Police Department (the renowned New York Police Department NYPD), who had asked for assistance in having more resources when it came to reducing people they considered to be dangerous to themselves or for third parties, as an alternative to the firearm or Taser.
Before living in the United States, the Argentine athlete won the gold medal with the Argentine Grappling Team (a discipline similar to Jiu Jitsu), wearing the official Albiceleste (sky blue and whites referencing the Argentine flag) shirt at the Pan American Tournament of that discipline held at Cenard (the National Center of High Performance Athletics in Argentina) in 2019. On the other hand, he also won two gold medals in "the Jiu Jitsu world mecca", which is in Brazil: in São Paulo in 2018 and in Belo Horizonte in 2019. He also competed in 2019 in Europe, more precisely in Rome, Italy.
Furlong graduated in 2012 as an Image and Sound Designer at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA), at the FADU (Faculty of Architecture, Design and Urbanism). "Later on I specialized in digital effects and worked on several films, series and commercials," he says. At the same time, "he trained twice a day, at 7 in the morning and 8 at night, from Monday to Saturday," he says. Today in New York he trains three times a day.
Internationally, he worked on visual effects on the Netflix series Maniac, starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill, and on the cinematic for the Game of Thrones game. Also in the Argentine films La odisea de los giles, Heart of the Lion, 30 nights with my ex, and The Mirror of Others.
"In 2021 we decided to come to New York with my wife Paula (Peralta) for a few months. The idea was to come to train and compete for three months and prepare for an important tournament in Europe. We arrived here on May 29th, with all the protocols because of the pandemic, but being here the opportunity arose to be sponsored by Lotus Club team in New York City and be able to extend the stay, the training and the competition, so we decided to bet on staying for a while longer and luckily everything went smoothly, and she always supported me so that we can continue living this experience, she is a photographer and many times she portrays moments of training or competition, and she is a great support so that I can continue competing", says Santiago, in this regard.
